RAMSEY, N.J. - Ramsey police are reminding pedestrians that they also have to obey the rules of the road.

Yes, motorists must stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk -- but that doesn't mean a pedestrian has the right to suddenly run into the path of a car or can expect the driver to be able to stop, Police Chief Bryan Gurney said.

He urged pedestrians to use marked crosswalks and curbs when possible and warned that violators could receive summons that carry fines of $200 or up to 15 days of community service.

At the same time, the chief reminded drivers that they face the same penalties -- in addition to two points taken from their licenses -- if they don't stop at a crosswalk.
